About Context

Beautiful light belongs
in everyday life.

Context makes light for homes and hospitality spaces. We’re based in Los Angeles, California. Our work starts with the way light meets a material and falls on the objects around it.

Light is part of the places we return to each day. It changes how a table feels when people sit down and how a room settles into evening. We think about the object and the atmosphere it creates together.

The atmosphere of a room.

A room holds different kinds of light. Daylight moves across a wall. A lamp draws a seat into view. A smaller glow can give a table its own place within the room.

We’re interested in the relationship between these layers. Light can gather people around dinner or give someone a place to sit alone. Its character comes from where it sits and what surrounds it. A light beside a seat has a different role from one in the middle of a table. Placement helps define the part of the room it belongs to.

Material shapes the light.

Light and the object carrying it are experienced together. A surface has a texture and a finish. The way it looks when lit should make sense with the way it looks at rest. The object is part of the room during the day, too.

Our candles begin with hand-poured, unscented paraffin wax. The wax gives the body a soft, natural finish. A warm, flickering LED lights it from within, with no burning wick or open flame. The wax is present in daylight, too, with a plain surface and a rounded rim around the light.

Simple objects, everyday use.

How a light fits into daily use matters to us. Its controls should be easy to understand. The object should feel at home where it is placed.

Each Context candle switches on or off with a flip. That keeps the action with the object, wherever you have placed it. The six candles share one USB dock. You can use them in separate parts of a room, then bring them together again to recharge.

For homes and shared spaces.

At home, a light often finds its place through daily habits. In a restaurant, it becomes part of setting each table for the next service.

A single candle can sit beside a book at home. At dinner, the six can be brought together around the table. For a venue, think about the tables you want to light and the candles you want on each. We welcome questions about placing Context at home or planning a set for service.
